"Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire
besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength
of my heart and my portion forever."

When people are poor, having no savings or retirement plan or investments, this verse is of immeasurable comfort. Though we have little or no portion of the things of this world, God is our portion, our inheritance, our retirement, forever!
Alas, it is not so easy for us. We have retirement accounts, and investments, and savings. And these things can be more important to us than God. Even preachers have these things today, and God is pushed out, as we are tempted to serve money and things rather than God.
Yet, if we believed this verse, truly believed that God is our portion, none of us would worry about accounts, inheritances, retirement, or death! Imagine having God Himself as your "portion," your inheritance! You are wealthy beyond belief, if God is your portion!
The way we utilize our finances and resources also changes drastically once we truly understand and believe that God is our portion. We no longer cling to our wealth but freely give it away, even as all things have been given freely to us! We discover that this is true freedom!

Prayer
For The Day

O Lord, I confess that I make the resources You have blessed me with, into my portion and inheritance, and forget You. Forgive me, Lord, and enable me to despise the things of this world, in comparison to my love for You. You are all I really want, all I really need. Remind me daily that You are my portion, my inheritance, and that therefore I am wealthy beyond comprehension! Amen.
