Treachery And Loyalty

"In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.  In it he wrote, 'Put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest.  Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.'"
2 Samuel 11:14,15

This verse records, almost certainly, the very lowest point in King David's life.  The callous irony is thick, sending faithful Uriah back to Joab, with the treacherous order for his own execution.

We should take note of how low we too can fall, when we allow sin and impenitance to gain a foothold in our lives.  The sinful flesh in all of us is capable of the most devious and dastardly behavior.

But what of Uriah?  Here was a faithful man, loyal to the King and to his fellow soldiers.  How can this happen to him?  Uriah remains one of the finest examples of loyalty and faithfulness.  He died doing his duty.  He enjoyed the blessings of integrity and commitment to the very end of his life.  He enjoys the blessedness of eternal life.

We cannot discern the wisdom of God in how He watches over us, but I'd rather have been Uriah than David.  Let us determine to be faithful and loyal in our duties, and simply trust God's loving wisdom for the rest.

Prayer For The Day

O Lord, I realize how capable I am of treachery and betrayal.  Forgive me, and keep me close to You, that I may never fall into such sin.  I recognize too my vulnerability to the devious evil of others.  Preserve me in faith, that I may remain loyal and faithful to You, and willing to place all things in Your hands.  Amen.
