Recabites!

"Jonadab son of Recab ordered his sons not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather's command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed Me."

No, it's not a new snack food! The "Recabites" were actually kind of like Old Testament monks. The doom of the forthcoming Babylonian captivity loomed in front of God's people. Still, as God notes, His people didn't obey His Word and repent.

Why is it that people can obey human rules and laws, but we refuse to submit and conform to God's Word? Punishment fell heavily on impenitent Israel. Again and again they despised and rejected God's Word.

We are not called to become "Recabites." We are in the world [though not of the world]. We are called to repentance, to rejoice in Christ's forgiveness, to allow God's love to enflame our love for one another.

The "Recabites" were an example to Israel. May we be an example to others, not of obedience to men, but of obedience to God, as we gather to hear His Word and receive His Supper in church, and live in repentance, faith, and love.

Prayer For The Day

O Lord, help me to pay heed to Your Word, which calls me to repentance and faith. Turn my heart and mind to worship, to receive Your Word and Sacrament. Help me to obey You, that I may be an example to others of the power of Your goodness and love, Amen.
