"Far be it from us to rebel against the Lord, and turn away from
Him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and
sacrifices, other than the alter of the Lord our God that stands before
His tabernacle."
Judges 23:29

It was with pious thoughts that certain Israelites built another altar, so that their descendents would forever remember that they were children of the only True and Living God. It almost caused war, sinced others interpreted it as idolatry.
This often happens when people "add" pious things not commanded by God to our spiritual life. It can be misinterpreted by others, and it can lead hearts and minds away from God's Word and Sacraments!
God has given us more than we can fully grasp and enjoy just in His Word, Baptism, and Holy Communion. May we focus on these precious gifts, and dig ever deeper into the joys He Himself gives us!

Prayer
For The Day

O Lord, Your Word and Sacraments can be grasped in simplicity, and then despised as being shallow. Preserve me from this temptation, and direct my heart back into Your Word, that I may find ever deeper facets of Your great love and care for me, in Your Word and Sacraments! Amen.
