Coveting - Contentment

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house.  You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
Exodus 20:17

Devotional Thought For The Day

After a long hard day of work, my son came home upset.  He had read of a young man receiving a $40,000 scholarship.  My son has to work to help pay for his college education.

It was apparent that "envy" had entered in.  That's coveting, when our desire for things becomes evil.  Coveting denudes us of thankfulness to God for what we have, and destroys the blessing of contentment.

I asked my son, considering all the blessings he has, whether he would trade places with anyone else, if all things were considered.  After some pause, he said, "No."  We can fight "coveting" by recognizing all the blessings God has given us, and being thankful to Him.

Prayer For The Day

O Lord, you know how often I covet those whose houses are larger, more glamorous than my own.  You know my heart, my envy, jealousy, and discontment.  Forgive me, and enable me to see how richly You have blessed me.  Give me the wisdom to realize that I wouldn't really want to trade places with anyone else.  Enable me to live in contentment, and to give thanks and praise to You always!  Amen.
