Cleansing The Temple

"The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts."

The king, Josiah, had read the Book of the Law, which had been rediscovered during a renovation of the temple.  He was immediately thrown into fear and repentance at God's judgment on human sin.

Further, he understood the wretchedness of the idolatry of the land.  Imagine, images and articles of the pagan false gods IN THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD!!!

Now, we don't have images of Baal in our homes, and we wouldn't tolerate them in our churches.  However, we do have the gods of greed, lust, spiritual sloth, miserliness, unbelief, and apathy in our hearts.

Look at these things as if they were idolatrous images and articles in the temple of the Lord, for after all the Lord Jesus has made you His temple, and dwells within you!  When he humbled himself, God forgave Josiah, and He forgives us when we also humble ourselves before Him!

Prayer For The Day

O Lord, I too am a child of my times, and I have allowed too much of the idolatry around me to enter into my heart.  Forgive me Lord, and cause Your Spirit to help me cleanse the temple of my heart.  Amen.
