Caring For Our Own

"If a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to practice godliness by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God."

Wait a minute now! Do parents continue providing for their adult grown-up children, including an inheritance, or are children to support their parents and grandparents, "repaying" them for years of nurture and support?

This passage gives us a glimpse into the utter ungodliness of the Menendez brothers who murdered their parents to get the inheritance right away. However, the Menendez brothers only carried to a horrific extreme what many people covet: to finally get their parent's wealth for themselves.

A pampered generation that refuses to grow up continues to depend upon parents and grandparents, rather than "caring for their own family." May it not be so within the church!

As God blesses and prospers us, we may not have enough money for new cars, vacation cabins or condos, luxuries, or exotic trips, but we will always have enough to care and provide for our family, including parents and grandparents. "For this is pleasing to God."

O Lord, I too am tempted with greed, and lack gratitude and compassion for the generations before me, who have generously nurtured me. Forgive me Lord, and help me mature, that I may know the joy and blessedness of providing for others. Amen.
